Where to park in Palencia

Palencia reads sideways, not lengthways: the Calle Mayor’s arcade runs down one flank only and stops short of the far end, so the two pavements of the same axis behave like two different addresses. The axis is for walking, and the car stays on the streets that cross it, under the ORA or in a car park out on the edge. Four ways to park in Palencia

Flank before category: Doobl brings together every option around your destination — the car parks, the street and the chargers — and the side of the axis you are heading for changes which of the three suits you.

  • Car parks

    Leaving the car before the old town starts and walking the rest is the advice people give here, which is why the edge car parks matter more than their size suggests: short streets, an axis nobody drives, and little room to improvise. In Doobl they show up with their price, beside the kerb and the chargers.

  • The kerb

    Neither pavement of the axis is parked on: the ORA — Palencia’s paid on-street parking — paints the streets that cross it, and the ones feeding the arcaded flank are not the ones feeding the open side. Doobl works out, for each street, whether your odds of finding a space when you arrive are High, Medium or Low.

  • Chargers

    Anyone plugging in here is not coming back to the car soon: you leave it once and do the centre on foot, so a point out on the edge suits that trip better than one glued to the door. In Doobl the chargers sit in the same list as the car parks.

  • Accessible bays

    Under the arcade the pavement is a colonnade of pillars, so the bays reserved for people with reduced mobility are marked on the streets that cross the axis and along the open frontage. Each one is governed by its own sign, and if your destination is under the portico, where you drop someone off and where the car stays are two separate decisions.

The four zones people search for in Palencia

Three of the four are played out inside the old town, on one side of the axis or the other; the hospital falls outside that count and is settled by driving to the door.

Calle Mayor

The arcade runs down one side of the commercial axis and stops before the street ends, so the same address has two versions: the covered one, with the shop windows and the strolling underneath, and the open one facing it. Since the axis is for walking, each flank is reached by different streets — and that is where the car ends up.

Under the portico the shop window rules: if your errand is on that side, come in by its streets, because on foot the axis takes one step to cross and by car it has to be driven right around.

Catedral de San Antolín

San Antolín is nicknamed “la bella desconocida”, and the name makes sense on arrival: no avenue lines it up and nothing on the way announces it, so you have parked before you know to look up. It stands a couple of turns off the axis, on Plaza de la Inmaculada, and you set out for it from whichever flank you left the car on.

Nothing tells you that you have arrived: put Plaza de la Inmaculada into the route rather than the cathedral’s name, and count the walk from the axis.

Hospital Universitario Río Carrión

Here the car gets back the job it almost loses everywhere else in this city. The complex sits outside the old town on an avenue of its own, and it is not somewhere you reach on foot from the edge the way you reach the rest: you drive in and park around it. It is the one point in this guide where the flank question answers nothing — there is no axis to go around, there is an avenue and a door.

The complex has more than one site, so it is the appointment letter, not the hospital’s name, that says which door you want: put that address into the route before you set off.

Estación

“Estación” names two places here. One is the railway one, north of the centre, next to the Jardinillos and the bus station. The other is a secondary terminus that lost its tracks more than a century ago and still stands a few streets away: today it is ground where cars are left, not where trains are caught. Whoever comes to travel wants the first; whoever comes to park often ends up at the second.

On a travelling day the car stays longer than you do: count the whole stay before choosing between the station frontage and the ground of the old terminus.

The ORA, colour by colour

  • ORA

    Under the arcade or outside it, regulated parking in Palencia is called ORA and works by sectors: the blue zone is the rotating one, open to anyone; orange tightens the stay where the kerb has to keep turning over; green sits apart, meant for leaving the car a long while and walking in. How do you park in Palencia?
The decision here is a side before it is a distance: check which flank of the Calle Mayor your destination is on, because the axis is walked and each pavement is reached by different streets. Then choose between the kerb, a car park and a charger. Search your destination in Doobl and compare the three before you set off.
Where can you park for free in Palencia?
Without paying, you park outside the ORA sectors, out towards the edges of the old town. That is also the way in people recommend here: leave the car before you reach the axis and do the rest on foot. What does not work is counting on the axis itself — the Calle Mayor is not parked on from either of its two sides.
Can you park in the centre of Palencia during the San Antolín fiestas?
Fiesta week turns the centre into another place: the programme closes in around the axis and the squares, and the kerb space that serves a quick errand the rest of the year is taken early and never empties. Which streets close, and when, is set and updated by the City Council; the flank logic does not change, it just stops forgiving improvisation.
How does the blue zone (ORA) work in Palencia?
Three colours share out the centre. Here the blue zone is the rotating one, open to anyone with an errand; orange moves the same square metre along faster; green sits apart, for leaving the car and carrying on by foot. The resident permit works in its own sector and not across the city, and on an axis nobody drives, what the ORA really shares out are the streets that cross it, flank by flank.
Can you drive into the centre of Palencia?
Much of the old town has been handed over to walking, street by street, and that — together with the ORA sectors and their sector-locked permit — is the real filter. The Calle Mayor is crossed on foot rather than by car, so the flank you come in by decides the whole trip. Whatever the Zona de Bajas Emisiones comes to require, the Ayuntamiento de Palencia will say so on its own site.
Where can you park near the Parque del Salón in Palencia?
The Parque del Salón sits at the same end of the old town as the commercial axis, and that is all you need to know in order to park: whoever comes for the park is looking in the same streets as whoever came to shop, at the hour when the two tread on each other most. If the walk is a long one, a car park takes the clock off you; if it is short, read the sign where you stop. Where are the EV chargers in Palencia?
You cannot stand under the portico: the walking runs beneath it and the frontage is pillars. So for a charge — which is standing time — the side that works is the open one, and the useful point is not the closest to the doorway but the one that leaves you on the flank you are going to walk. If it sits on a regulated bay, that bay’s sign still governs.
