From the castle to the market: five stops

The municipality splits across its width: in front, the built-up coast; behind it, the country under plastic, which here is not a hinterland but the town’s other trade. All five stops below fall on the sea side, and even so none of them is settled the way the last one was.

Playa Serena

Playa Serena went up in one go, its street plan drawn before the buildings, and that shows on the ground: the streets were born with the blocks and the space for a car came in the same drawing, not added later onto an older grid. In practice you do not improvise down side streets here, you choose between long lines running parallel to the sea.

The space you cannot see from the seafront avenue is usually on the parallel street behind it: one block inland changes the whole picture.

Castillo de Santa Ana

Climbing the tower and unloading the day’s catch happen at the same threshold: the Castillo de Santa Ana looks out over the fishing port, and a driver arriving here pulls into somewhere that is at work at that hour. There is no monument forecourt; there is a quay, and the quay puts the trade before the visit.

If the fish market is busy, leave the car before you drop down to the quay and walk in from there: what moves along it is pallet trucks.

Puerto de Aguadulce

Aguadulce occupies the end of the municipality that faces the provincial capital, which is why many people park it as though it were Almería’s own front door: you reach it along the coast from there sooner than from the town of Roquetas. The marina also brings a peak of its own, the hour boats go out, which lines up neither with the beach nor with the market.

Coming along the coast from Almería, this port shows up before the rest of the municipality: decide here whether your destination is on the water or on the far side of the boundary, because doubling back is expensive.

Aquarium Roquetas de Mar

The Aquarium and the Mario Park next door are entered through adjoining gates, and that closeness organises the whole day: with children you do not string stops together, you make one and stretch it. So the ground that matters is not the one nearest the ticket desk, it is the one that will hold a long stay without forcing the car to move mid-morning.

Park once and park for a full day: a double gate invites you to stay longer than you reckoned on the way in.

Gran Plaza

Gran Plaza divides its apron between two customers who barely meet: the shopping-centre one, arriving by car on any day of the week, and the market one, who takes over that same ground for a morning and walks in from the neighbourhood. This is the resident’s zone rather than the visitor’s: the big errand happens here, and the hurry is a household hurry.

On market morning the apron changes owner early: if your errand is inside the shopping centre, come in from the side the stalls do not take.

    Roquetas regulates the parking and the overnight stay of motorhomes through an ordinance of its own, and it applies to the seafront and to the inland pedanías alike. It is what to read before leaving a large vehicle here, because it separates being parked from staying the night, and that border does not look the same in front of a beach bar as it does beside an agricultural warehouse. The text in force, with its conditions and its exceptions, lives in the ordinance and not in what everyone did last summer.
