Once the centre is settled the option almost picks itself: under Zielo and inside La Finca the ground is private, while in Casco Histórico and Somosaguas the kerb decides.   • Car parks

    The car parks this town really uses sit underneath its destinations: Zielo was built on top of one, and the La Finca buildings take the car in before you ever reach a kerb.   • Chargers

    In the centres built on private ground the socket usually sits inside, past the barrier; in the street-run ones it sits wherever the kerb does. The four centres, one at a time

None of the four acts as the centre of the other three: Casco Histórico, La Finca, Somosaguas and Zielo have their own way in, their own busy hour and their own way of dealing with a car. Start from the one your trip belongs to and half the doubt goes away.

Casco Histórico

Casco Histórico is old Pozuelo de Alarcón: Plaza Mayor, the town hall, narrow streets and the shops that were always there. It is also the least strained of the four centres, because the demand arriving from outside moved to the newer ones and what stays is mostly the neighbourhood’s own, with SER on the busiest stretches.

An errand at the town hall fits inside a blue stretch; lunch afterwards does not. Decide for the long stop rather than the first one.

La Finca

La Finca is an office park on the western edge, with internal roads of its own, barriers and levels under each building: the parking question starts at its gate, not in the town. Anyone driving in to work barely touches a kerb; anyone coming for a single meeting does, because not every car clears the barrier, and what is left then is the regulated edge at Somosaguas Centro.

Ask which entrance you are using before you set off: the navigation drops you at the perimeter gate, and the building you want can be on the far side of it.

Somosaguas

Somosaguas packs three unrelated reasons into very little ground: the Complutense faculties on the campus, the office edge climbing up from La Finca, and the residential streets of Húmera. The same stretch serves whoever came for a class, whoever came to work and whoever lives there, and none of the three arrives or leaves when the others do.

Look at who filled the street before you press on: in term time the pressure comes off the campus and eases towards Húmera; out of term it runs exactly the other way.

Zielo Shopping

Zielo Shopping went up on Avenida de Europa with its parking underneath, and that is the whole of its logic: in by ramp, out by ramp, the street above barely involved. It is the only one of the four centres where the building answers the question outright, which is what makes it the counterweight to the other three, where the kerb answers it.

Plan the exit before the arrival: driving back across Avenida de Europa costs more than crossing it on foot, so pick the side you will be leaving from.

    Regulated parking in Pozuelo de Alarcón is called SER and answers to a by-law written here and for here alone, with a share-out of colours of its own: green puts the resident of that zone first, blue is open rotation, red is painted where the shops move the most cars, and orange is aimed at local trade.
